Composite Fillings at Dental Smiles Chelmsford

Composite Fillings

Most of our patients opt for ‘white fillings’ also known as composite fillings. These fillings restore teeth by bonding to the tooth surface and the tooth appears natural at the end of treatment making them almost unnoticeable.

Your Composite Filling Journey

1. Consultation

The first step on your treatment journey with Dental Smiles Chelmsford is an in-depth consultation. It helps us to assess your smile, allows us to look over your dental history, and ensures you can discuss your composite bonding treatment in advance.

2. Treatment

White fillings are placed following tooth decay or root canal (endodontic) treatment. In the case of decay (cavities), we can mould and shape the composite resin to help ‘plug’ the gap in the tooth. An anaesthetic may be administered first to ensure there’s no discomfort during treatment. A white tooth filling is made of a strong, natural-looking composite resin, though in some cases, a porcelain inlay is required to further strengthen the tooth.

3. Aftercare

We are committed to dental excellence – so your dental care doesn’t end when we put down our tools. With composite fillings it’s important to maintain good oral hygiene, we’ll provide detailed aftercare following your treatment, to ensure they stand the test of time and you feel happy and confident about them.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of Composite Fillings?

The main benefit to white fillings is that they’re stronger and more durable than metal amalgam fillings, as they bond to the tooth. They’re also far less noticeable and involve less removal of the tooth structure than other types.

The only disadvantage with white fillings is that they can be a more expensive option than their metal counterparts, however, the resin used doesn’t contract and expand as metal does, so you may need to replace them frequently.

Who is suitable for Composite Fillings?

Most patients are suitable for fillings as they are relatively straightforward to undertake and provide long-term protection to teeth that have suffered from decay.

How do I know if I need a Filling?

You may notice that the tooth is not okay if you feel that it is slightly broken or particularly sensitive to cold or sweets. However, cavities actually can be undetected by the patient until the very last stages so you may not realise you need one. That’s why they require early diagnosis to help save as much healthy tooth as possible.

It is important that you attend the dentist for check-ups frequently so they can monitor the health of your teeth and look for tooth decay that could lead to enamel damage and ultimately, a cavity. Undertaking a regular oral hygiene routine (such as brushing and flossing consistently) will help protect against bacteria and decay. Catching tooth decay early can often mean that the enamel doesn’t get damaged and you won’t need a filling.

Our clinical priority is saving teeth wherever possible so we will look for the best options for you and discuss them with you in as much detail as you need.
