Can I drink tea or coffee and have white teeth?

Cleaning teeth with Dental Smiles Chelmsford

Yes! You can still drink tea & coffee and have white teeth.

Tea and coffee can cause staining on the teeth due to a compound found in them called ‘Tannin’ which can easily stick to the enamel of the teeth making the teeth appear darker. Tea and coffee is also slightly acidic which over time, can soften the enamel making teeth more prone to staining.

Tips to prevent staining:

  1. Rinse your mouth out with water after drinking tea/coffee to wash away the ‘tannins’ before it sticks to your teeth

  2. Drink through a straw to reduce the drinks touching your teeth

  3. Good oral hygiene such as brushing for the full two minutes and flossing between the teeth will prevent build up

  4. Limit the amount of tea/coffee you are drinking

If you still notice staining, book a hygienist appointment. The ultrasonic scalers they use help remove the staining and prevent further build up.
