How do I prevent tooth decay?

Prevent tooth decay

To prevent tooth decay, it is advised to limit sugar to meal times only.

Every time you consume sugar, the sugar reacts with the bacteria in your mouth and attacks the enamel. If this is happening multiple times a day, every day, the tooth enamel can start to break down more quickly, forming a hole in the tooth where decay can spread into the enamel.

That's why it is advised to only have 3-4 ‘acid attacks’ a day, this includes your 3 meals, and to make sure you are brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste which protects and strengthens the enamel to fight decay.

Snacks in-between meals should be sugar free. Be wary of hidden sugars such as fruit, fruit juices, yoghurts and protein bars as these tend to contain high sugar levels. Check the ingredient list for syrups, concentrates or words ending in -ose’ (such as fructose, glucose, maltose and sucrose). Opt for options such as vegetables or cheese.

Sugar free gum is also recommended to increase the flow of saliva which neutralises harmful acids, washes away food particles, and helps remineralise enamel.

Also make sure you are seeing your dentist regularly as they can detect early signs of decay and help you prevent it before it needs a filling.
